Case number three is Roger, Now Roger, a five-year Federal Way Police Department veteran has filed a $57,000 damage claim against the city, saying he was "forced to wear a heavy leather gun belt and holster that damaged his hip." Roger feels that his right not to have his hip damaged has been violated, so he contacted his lawyer.[13]

The common thread is easy to see, in each case when anyone believes that their rights are being violated or ignored, the victim, or the person who feels that they are a victim, gets in touch with a lawyer. Why do they do this? They do this because one basic quality of all rights is that they mean nothing unless there is someone to enforce them.[14] In the case of our society it is a lawyer who through the courts is the champion of the victims rights, who stands up for what is right. For "a right without a remedy is just a suggestion."[15]

While many would find this picture of nobility to be laughable in the least, one such group who do not are the lawyers themselves. In a recent speech to the American Bar Association, William F. Winter, (a former governor of Mississippi, and now partner at the law firm of Watkins, Ludlam, Winter & Stennis, P.A.) made some remarks that paint the picture that lawyers are called to be the champions of human rights.
