As the novel progresses, different characters reveal their prejudices in various ways, some violently, others more discreetly. The first prejudice to appear is from Scout, Dill and Jem though they do not realise it. They make up stories about Boo such as him looking through their windows, eating cats and squirrels is all prejudice.

They play games of running up to his house and daring each other to touch it. If Boo had been a normal person of Maycomb County, the children would not be interested in him but because he is different, they are fascinated by the myths surrounding him and are desperate to know more about him. When he does finally come out to save the children, all of their prejudices are gone when they find out that he is a normal person after all.
When Tom Robinson was put in jail ready to stand trial, Atticus, his lawyer, went down in the evening and sat outside the jailhouse. Scout and Jem, wondering what he was doing, followed him and watched a mob of shadowy people move over to where Atticus was sitting.
