... is beneath a castle keep known as Peveril Castle. Built in Norman times it was to protect the king's rights to the forest that then covered vast areas of the Peak District. It is open to walk up the hill to look at the ruins and also proves popular with many tourists

Castleton is known as a "honey pot area", as tourists flock to it like bees around a honeypot. In some spots Castleton cannot cope with the number of tourists - including certain crags, caves, fragile upland moorland paths on steep slopes, where psychological, physical and ecological capacities are being exceeded.

WHAT WERE MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF CASTLETON?

We set off from Arden School, Knowle, West Midlands at 8:10 on Sunday 2nd July and arrived at the Youth Hostel, Castleton, Derbyshire at 10:10am on the same day. We travelled down the M42, the M1, the A617 and came off at junction 29 before arriving at Castleton.

My first impressions of Castleton and the surrounding area were that:

¨ The majority of the buildings were made of old stone, not modern bricks

¨ There was bunting and flags for a special occasion in Hope

¨ The roads were narrow and windy in places

¨ There were many fields - some crops, some animals

¨ There were many sheep and cows

¨ The Cement Works looked big and dominated the hi ...
