This sonnet was written towards the end of the First World War by a soldier who had experienced many horrors on the front line. Wilfred Owen captures the reality of the war in this moving sonnet. He writes of the many deaths which occurred during the war that emphasises the reality of the severity of the war. As a soldier Owen would have first hand experience of the front line and as such would not be duped by the mediaÆs portrayal of war as romantic and heroic.
