How to Write an Essay

Making a plan

First and foremost you will need to decide the topic you want to write about, if this has not already been predetermined. The next phase would be to do some research around the subject and decide what your essay will be trying to highlight and the message you want to get across, some people find it helpful to write a list or brainstorm ideas at this point and then use these to pick out your best concepts.

It’s a good idea at this time to write a thesis for your essay, this should be a sentence to sum up what you are going to say about your subject.
The next phase of the plan is to write an outline, this will be the guide that you use to structure your essay. What you need to do is sum up what you want each paragraph to say in brief. Then write some bullet points underneath each heading for what you want to say about each section. Make sure each paragraph makes a point and does not contradict itself. You can then play around with the order and see how the essay will flow.

Writing the Introduction

The introduction is very important as it should grab the reader’s attention and entice them into read more of the article. This should be a build-up of a few lines that will lead to your thesis statement.

Writing the paragraphs

If you have already written an outline this should be the easy part as you should already know by now what it is you want each paragraph to say. So elaborate on the bullet points you have already made and make sure that each of your paragraphs makes a clear point.

Writing the Conclusion

This is the ending paragraph to your essay and you should go out with a bang, firstly start by saying a few words that will wrap up the article trailed by a notable thought, you might be able to find a famous quote that will fit what you have been trying to say, for example.

Reading over your essay.

Now this is the most important part of any essay writing. Does your writing make sense? Are you getting your point across? Is your use of grammar correct? You should proofread your essay and amend it a few times until it sounds the way you want it to sound. You do not want to mess up all your hard work because of a few careless sentences. Finally get someone else to read it and ask them to be critical. If all is well and good submit your essay. Good luck.
